The publication of MODAF is a significant achievement in setting a baseline standard to stimulate coherent architecture development in the UK defence sector.
Working with the Defence MooD Policy Group, we have established MIDAS - a MODAF convergent blueprint for MooD. This blueprint is available free of charge for MOD users. It is currently being deployed across a number of projects within both business space and battlespace.
The initial focus on equipment capability acquisition does not restrict the wider applicability of the standard, which has also been demonstrated to deliver value through business transformation and communication. For example, using MooD and MIDAS, a business architecture has been created for the STRATSYS IPT and distributed over the local intranet to build and communicate common understanding across the team.
The MODAF standard is enabling sharing of information between projects, and the development of core reference information for continued exploitation. This includes, for example, the Defence Capability Framework together with Task Lists and Defence Directory structures.
MODAF also provides an opportunity to develop common skills across the defence sector, especially relating to methods and notations for capability management. In this regard, Salamander is partnering with the Defence Academy at Cranfield University to provide a series of short training courses on Enterprise Architecture for Defence, focusing on MODAF.
